Good relations with the West, which provides the bulk of Ghana's military and development aid, are a priority. Ghana has played a significant part in UN peacekeeping operations. After Nigeria, it is also the main contributor to the ECOWAS forces (ECOMOG) stationed in war-torn Liberia since 1990. In 1993, the Ghanaian government called unsuccessfully for ECOWAS to intervene to suppress civil unrest in Togo.
